The orthapedic surgeon who will be doing the surgery feels she will have a complete recovery and be able to function normally for the rest of her life. Pearl has already suffered for at least two years. The original vet who saw her (prior to adoption)deemed her hip problem an old injury that could not be fixed. And should not be bothering her. But her adopter was not comfortable with this diagnosis and sought help. Upon further inspection, it was found that Pearls hip is completely out of its socket AND she has a luxated patella on the same side. It WAS bothering her and it IS painful and it is definately keeping Pearl from being all the dog that she can be.

Pearl came from PNWPBR and was adopted as a dog with a healed injury that could not be fixed(As they had been told by their vet). Knowing differently now, we feel it would be unfair for her adopter to have to foot the entire bill. In fact..we would like to raise the entire amount. Both surgeries and after care will be twice the amount we are trying to raise. So we are doing our part to assist. Jenny is a vet student at Oregon State University and she took a day out of her busy schedule to bring Oscar up to visit and share some good news with us! Oscar is now a Certified Therapy Dog as well as an Animal Assisted Crisis Responder!!! While with us Oscar acheived his Canine Good Citizen and we knew he had potential, but teamed up with his new mom, they are unstoppable! Ouzo was one of Hera's thirteen babies that BullsEye Rescue (http://www.bullseyerescue.org/) graciously helped us out with. When Hera showed up in a local shelter, due to give birth anyday on a cold floor, we took her into PNWPBR even though all of our fosters were full. BullsEye gave Hera and her 13 babies a foster home and when it was time for the kids to move on, PNWPBR took back half of the kiddos while BullsEye kept the other. All but two of them have already found their forever homes! When we saw LadyBug walk, we understood why.

LadyBug has mobility problems, and to what extent we are still not sure. She is being diagnosed by specialists who are working on a diagnosis. She has had X-Rays, bloodwork and a full neuro exam.

This sweetheart of a dog though has no idea that she has a problem though, this girl has HEART! Normally PNWPBR does not take medical cases such as hers because of the thousands of Pit Bulls in shelters that also need saving, but with her wonderful personality and infectious smile.... we decided that she was worth trying to help.

Right now LadyBug is on medications to help her mobility and does not seem to be in any pain per the three vets that have seen her, but her vet bills are starting to add up and we would hate for money to be what stops us from being able to help LadyBug.

If you or someone you know is able to help, even a tiny bit, LadyBug would greatly appreciate it!

Contributions to her care can be made via paypal to: pnwpbr@yahoo.com or directly to her vet

Cascade Park Animal Hospital
16820 SE McGillivray Blvd.
Vancouver, Wa 98683
Phone: 360-892-2122
Fax: 360-567-3397

If you decide to pay to the vet directly, please let them know it is a Pacific Northwest Pit Bull Rescue dog so they know what account LadyBug is under.

LadyBug thanks you, from the bottom of her sweet Pit Bull Heart!

Help Puck Fly Home!!!

For those of you that have followed the threads on Pit Bull-Chat, Ucare and PitBullForum... Puck AKA "Old Man" is going to be adopted and needs to get from Vancouver, WA to Wilmington, NC.

Puck is anywhere between 9-11 years old and was found as a stray in Vancouver, WA. He was brought into the local shelter and despite his great demeanor, he was "too scruffy" to be put up for adoption. We have tested him with kids, male dogs, female dogs, a puppy, a cat and even goats.... this boy is awesome! Neutering him will curb his OBSESSION to mark everything (LOL!) and possibly slow him down a bit. This sweetheart doesn't know his age! He of course is a little rough around the edges, but with some love and good food, Puck will be able to live out the rest of his life as he has always deserved.... happy.

I have a call into his vet to get quotes so ill have exact amounts tomorrow on how much we are looking at but what we need done is:

Neuter
Pre-Op bloodwork (because of his age)
Rabies Shot
Health Certificate (stating he can fly on an airplane)

Then I got his airfare quote from Delta Airlines for $335.69

Id like to also be able to purchase him an extra soft crate pad for his old, sweet bones as well as a Nylabone and a stuffed animal to give him stuff to chew on while en-route.

We were able to avoid boarding him because my wonderful and understanding husband said Puck can room here with us (and our 4 other fosters!) until his flight so that part we are good on.

I am estimating (I will know exact tomorrow when the vet gets back to me) around $550for his total.

Donations can be made directly to his vet:

Hayden Meadows Pet Clinic
503-286-9155

and then donations for the flight and his toys can be made via paypal to:
pnwpbr@yahoo.com

Time is of the essence with getting this all arranged. We would like to fly him this weekend if at all possible so any, tiny bit would help greatly!!!!

UPDATE:

Thank you to everyone who helped Puck get home! She is too far along to spay/abort as she is due any minute. Our rescue is FULL right now, but we did not want her to have her babies on a cold, concrete floor... so she came home with us until a rescue is found for her and her babies.

This rescue would need to be on the west coast since the puppies cannot fly until they are older. The rescue must agree to alter ALL the pups and mom before put up for adoption, no spay/neuter contracts. We also ask that the pups and mom are kept together for the minumum of 8 weeks.... some people try to seperate them at 6 and that is a little too young since they need to learn dog communication, socialization as well as bite inhibition.

Mom seems very low on the Dog Aggressive scale so far, she is very sweet and gentle and loves her belly rubbed!

If you or a rescue that you know of has room for a urgent sweetie, please contact us ASAP at pnwpbr@yahoo.com

UPDATE: Hera had her THIRTEEN babies on August 20th, 2007 starting at 1:43am. So far all of the "kids" are doing well and thriving, but we are still desperate to find a rescue that can take them. Right now we do not have the foster home capacity to home 13 puppies. Hera and her babies will be going to Bullseye Rescue on Thursday the 6th!

By the end of October when they are old enough, PNWPBR will probably be taking 3-6 of them back to help Bullseye place them since they don't have 13 foster slots and we don't either.

Bullseye is collecting donations for the large spay/neuter bill these kids will have, along with vaccinations and de-worming and supplements if Hera cannot continue to feed them. If you can help we ask that you donate via paypal on their website: http://www.bullseyerescue.org/ Please make sure to make a notation in the comments that it is for "Hera and the babies"

Can a dog live for a year on the streets and not be feral? Meet Felida!!

Meet Felida.
She's named for the area of town that she resided in for over a YEAR. Felida lived on the streets, refusing to let anyone get close to her to catch her or even pet her. She lived in a field, made herself a den, and ate garbage and the occasional treat or kibble the people in the neighborhood would leave her.

When winter came, they made her a little box with blankets.

When summer came, and Animal Control had given up on catching her, one of the neighbors emailed me desperate. They all loved this little Pit Bull and wanted to see her safe and not on the streets.

If AC couldn't catch her what made them think I could?

It was worth a try.

I brought the neighbors tranquilizers the evening before and asked them to put it in some wet food and set it out in the morning. From their back deck they could see the food and they were to call me as soon as they saw her eat it.

And she gobbled it all up.

My husband and I drove out there with a catch pole and our fingers crossed..... thinking we would find a feral and upset Pit Bull that we would have to euthanize.

What we found was a tiny little Pit Bull, black with a white chest... stumbling around the field like a drunken midget. We caught her and brought her to the shelter for impound.

I helped vaccinate her and deworm her, thinking that when the meds wore off she was going to be an ornry little bugger.

I was wrong.

Later on in the day I went back to see her again, I took a chance and went inside her kennel and sat on the concrete floor. She approached fearfully, tail tucked, but licked my face.

I told myself the drugs were still affecting her and that I would try again tomorrow.

Tomorrow was Sunday and I went to see her again.

Same response, she kissed me and this time I got tail-wags. Her body was shaking from head to toe, she looked ill from the stress of the shelter. If she was to get better from this ordeal she was going to need to get out of there.

I arranged with the shelter that we are fostering her until her stray hold is up, and then PNWPBR will own her and make the call on euthing her or not. Im hopeful that we won't have to, and these pictures should speak for themself.

At the Shelter

Sunday

Monday

Kissing Carly, our Post-Adoption's counselor

Kissing "Mom" aka Ellena, the Executive Director

UPDATE:

It is now Wednesday and the 4th of July. Most people think of dog training as the simple: “Sit!” or maybe “Shake” when it comes to training their pet companion, but part of being a responsible Pit Bull owner is taking your training a few steps further than that.

Since owning an American Pit Bull Terrier puts you and your dog in the public’s eye, your actions and your dog’s actions will reflect on the breed as a whole. Having a well-trained Pit Bull is one way to not only ensure that Pit Bull’s are viewed in a positive manner, but to make the relationship between you and your dog a happy one!

First let’s go over two different types of training:

Classical Conditioning

Classical Conditioning is a way to create a specific emotional state within your dog in response to a specific stimulus. Think back to school and Pavlov’s dogs…. Pavlov conditioned his dogs to drool when they heard the sound of a bell. He did so by ringing the bell before mealtime and the dogs learned to associate the bell with food. Food then would cause the dogs to salivate. In time, the mere sound of the bell would cause the dogs to salivate, food or not.

To use Classical Conditioning to create a desirable result you introduce a stimulus to the dog’s environment. Immediately after the stimulus you would then introduce some thing good, a toy, a treat, ect. When Pavlov would ring his bell for example, he would then introduce the food. Bell= Food= Positive association for the dogs at the sound of the bell.

Now with this type of training a shy dog or a dog that has once received negative stimulus may take longer to overcome their emotional response to a situation. Classical Conditioning is emotional based so depending on the dogs emotional state or health depends on the progress in your training.

Operant Conditioning

Operant Conditioning is different from Classic Conditioning as it is not about emotional responses to stimulus, but instead your dog learning he/she can affect their environment through their actions. For example: Many dogs learn that if they sit when we tell them to, they get a treat. They learn to understand that whether or not they get a treat depends on their behavior!

Operant Conditioning has four goals in it’s method of training. First, it sets “ground rules” for teaching and training. Second, based on the ground rules the dog learns to be responsible for it’s behavior: Good Behavior= Reward, Bad Behavior= Nothing. Third, the dog learns to understand that they have to work with people to get something desireable, and therefore will actually start to seek out opportunities to engage with people. Fourth, the dog will approach learning with confidence and become better to come with new situations.

Now let’s talk about the basic Principles of Operant Conditioning!

Create a “Positive Reward Marker.” Your Positive Reward Marker can be whatever you and your dog decide on. It can be a word, a sound, a hand signal, some people use a clicker. This Positive Reward Marker is the way you will tell your dog that they are doing something good, mark the good behavior and that a treat is coming! Make sure that you use your Positive Reward Marker the same EACH time you train your dog and IMMEDIATELY after your dog does the positive behavior!

Now that you have your Positive Reward Marker, you have to move on to the dirty deed of choosing a Negative Reward Marker. Again, a sound, a signal, a hand gesture. We use the sound “Eh-eh” and said quickly and sharply it marks that your dog has done something negative and that no reward is coming. Remember to use this with the same efficiency as your Positive Reward Marker, right after the negative behavior!

Now that we have our Markers we can move on to Positive and Negative Reinforcement as well as Positive and Negative Punishment.

Positive Reinforcement: Using something appealing that encourages the dog to repeat the good behavior
Example- Giving the dog a treat for good behavior

Negative Reinforcement: Taking away something un-appealing that encourages the dog to repeat the behavior.
Example- Reduce the pressure on the leash when the dog stops pulling

Positive Punishment: Using something un-appealing that discourages the dog from repeating the bad behavior
Example: Saying “NO!” or using a squirt bottle

Negative Punishment: Taking away something appealing that discourages the dog from repeating the behavior
Example: Withholding the treat when the dog jumps on you.

To summarize: The goal of “punishment” is to discourage the dog from repeating the behavior. Always follow punishment with positive reinforcement when the dog then performs the correct behavior.
Now that we have gone over two types of basic training you can do at home with your dog, let’s not forget that sometimes professional training is helpful! Using a professional trainer can help you ease some of the frustration of reading about training and then trying to execute it yourself. A trainer can show you how to execute and explain a lot better than a book can!

Here’s a list of a few local dog training facilities that we recommend!

Oregon

Happy-Go-Lucky Dog Training & Playcare (Portland)
www.happygoluckydog.com

Auntie Tracy/Auntie Sally Dog Training (Portland)
www.dogaunties.com
Group and private positive dog training

Pawsitively Possible (Portland)
http://www.pawsitivelypawssible.com/

Romp and Rastle (Portland)
http://www.rompandrastle.com/

Behave! Look here!

Association of Pet Dog Trainers
http://www.apdt.com/

Now say you have a wonderfully trained pet companion, a Pit Bull Ambassador…. What next? Well there are two tests that we would love to see all of our PNWPBR Alumni take and pass!!!

First let’s start with the Canine Good Citizen!

http://www.akc.org/events/cgc/index.cfm

“Welcome to the AKC's Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) Program Sponsored by K9 Advantix®. Started in 1989, CGC is a certification program that is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. The Canine Good Citizen Program is a two-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club.

Many dog owners choose Canine Good Citizen training as the first step in training their dogs. The Canine Good Citizen Program lays the foundation for other AKC activities such as obedience, agility, tracking, and performance events. As you work with your dog to teach the CGC skills, you'll discover the many benefits and joys of training your dog. Training will enhance the bond between you and your dog. Dogs who have a solid obedience education are a joy to live with-they respond well to household routines, have good manners in the presence of people and other dogs, and they fully enjoy the company of the owner who took the time to provide training, intellectual stimulation, and a high quality life. We sincerely hope that CGC will be only a beginning for you and your dog and that after passing the CGC test, you'll continue training in obedience, agility, tracking, or performance events.

AKC's Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) Program Sponsored by K9 Advantix® is one of the most rapidly growing programs in the American Kennel Club. There are many exciting applications of this wonderful, entry level that go beyond the testing and certifying of dogs.

Many other countries (including England, Australia, Japan, Hungary, Denmark, Sweden, Canada, and Finland) have developed CGC programs based on the AKC's CGC Program. A CGC Neighborhood Model has been established, police and animal control agencies use CGC for dealing with dog problems in communities, some therapy dog groups use the CGC as a partial screening tool, and some 4-H groups around the country have been using the CGC as a beginning dog training program for children.

A number of specialty (one breed only) clubs give the CGC at their annual national dog show. Dog clubs have discovered that the CGC is an event that allows everyone to go home a winner. Veterinarians have recognized the benefits of well-trained dogs and there are some CGC programs in place in veterinary hospitals. State legislatures began recognizing the CGC program as a means of advocating responsible dog ownership and 22 states now have Canine Good Citizen resolutions.

In a little over one decade, the Canine Good Citizen Program has begun to have an extremely positive impact in many of our communities. This is a program that can help us assure that the dogs we love will always be welcomed and well-respected members of our communities. “

What does all of that mean to you? Well it means if you take the test, and you and your dog pass…. Your rescued pooch goes from once abandoned to an official Canine Good Citizen!! Not only are they making all Pit Bulls everywhere look better, but it has been easier for CGC Pit Bulls to be in rentals, easier to obtain homeowner’s insurance and not to mention throwing it out when someone says that your Pit Bull is “Vicious.” For more information on the CGC go to the link provided above and then contact us when you feel you are ready to take the test!

One other test we would love to see your PNWPBR alumni take and pass is the American Temperament Test. You can find out more information about the organization and the test here: http://www.atts.org/

If your Pit Bull takes and passes the test you and your dog are helping bump up the national number of Temperament Tested Pit Bulls.

Example:

AMERICAN PIT BULL TERRIER
Taken Passed Failed Percent Passed
542 456 86 84.1%

Our goal is to get those numbers into the 90% and we can’t do it without your help!! For questions about the test or upcoming tests in our area please feel free to contact us!

Please remember that your dog being well-behaved not just in your home, but in public is very important to us. If you have issues with training, finding a trainer, or any of the tests we discussed in this handout please feel free to contact us! We are here to make your adoption as well as your and your dog’s lives together successful!!

Property of PNWPBR 2007

So much going on!

So welcome to the busy world of Pacific Northwest Pit Bull Rescue!

To date we have adopted out 30 dogs in 11 months.... thats almost 3 dogs a month!

So why 11 months you ask?
